Seven months ago, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. In the months since, he underwent surgery and has been on his path to recovery. Aside from the periodic visits to his specialist, he is back to normal as far as I’m concerened.

I’m racing in honor of my father. He showed a lot of resolve, toughness, and courage throughout this process. I hope I can show at least an ounce of that come race day.

“The inaugural 2012 Ironman U.S Championship is a new additional to the prestigious Ironman global series. The 140.6-mile race will take place in parts of both New York City and New Jersey, making it the most metropolitan environment ever to host an Ironman.  The course will include a 2.4-mile swim in the Hudson River; a 112-mile bike ride on the Palisades Parkway in Bergen and Rockland Counties; and a 26.2-mile run beginning in New Jersey and finishing in Riverside Park in Manhattan.”

Random thoughts…

• It’s pretty cool that the WTC was able to figure out the logistics and acquire permits to do this race.
• Kinda disappointed that it’s pretty much IM Northern NY instead of NYC, but to my previous point, getting permits to shut down major roadways in NYC for 18 hours was probably next to impossible.
• Also odd that WTC announced this on the heels of Ironman Mont Tremblant. Registration for both events open on the same day - both of which are within a week of each other in August in 2012.
• Registration fee for IM Tremblant is $692 US.  What will NYC be?  I’m saying at least $1000 US.
